Title:
"Crossroads
for Spouses" (Pre-Departure or In-Country)
For more than 20
years, research has shown again and again that the single most
common reason for overseas assignment failure is spousal
dissatisfaction. The inescapable conclusion is that all expatriate
training and coaching workshops need to include ample attention to
the expatriate spouse, whether female or male. And, in fact, all
"Gateway," "Pathway," and
"Homecoming" workshop available from GlobalWorkshop.com
explicitly address the challenges facing the spouse.
In addition,
GlobalWorkshop.com offers special "Crossroads" workshops
in order to have an extra measure of attention and support
available for spouses. Tailored to explore career alternatives,
"Crossroads" workshops combine classic career counseling
(self-assessment and job-hunting techniques) with country-specific
employment, personal fulfillment, and networking information.
"Crossroads"
workshops may be offered for individual spouses or for groups of
up to six, and may occur as
a pre-departure or in-country event.
Objectives:
- to gain awareness of
the opportunities and obstacles to finding work in the new
location
- to develop a realistic
view of employment possibilities in the new location
- to enhance the spouse’s
personal repertoire of job-hunting skills
- to create a concrete list
of alternatives if finding work is not a realistic option.
Duration:
Full-day workshops are best
for spouses who wish to continue a career in the host country.
Half-day workshops are
sufficient for spouses who what to maximize their non-career
opportunities in the host country.
Coach’s
Qualifications:
- extended personal experience
as an expatriate spouse abroad
- active participant or leader
in organizations dedicated to expatriate spouse concerns
- professionally familiar with
techniques of career counseling
- familiar with employment and
personal growth opportunities in the target country.
Agenda:
"Crossroads"
workshops are not delivered using a standard agenda. Each workshop
emphasizes either employment opportunities, or (non-employment)
personal fulfillment opportunities, depending upon the interest of
the spouse(s) in attendance. A second factor influencing the agenda
is the previous overseas experience of the attendee(s). A third
factor is whether the participant(s) have previously attended a
"Gateway" and/or "Pathway" workshop offered by
GlobalWorkshop.com. Finally, the identity of the target nation
influences the design of the workshop.
